    STEM teachers! A PD opportunity through Salem State Collaborative Project starts on October 18, 2021. 

    It is called Strategies for Science, Technology, and Engineering and it is an online, 4 week workshop that highlights beneficial strategies to support the teaching of Science, Technology, and Engineering.

    Sessions will include differentiating practices for diverse learners and STEAM. All strategies are adaptable to grades 3-12. This workshop directly fulfills the DESE Individual Professional Development plan requirement of 15 PDPs in STEM content (subject matter knowledge).

    Please join us for our Fall Workshop to learn more and to further develop your skills in brining STEM and invention to the classroom.


    This new training is specific for anyone teaching YIP for the first time. Educators will participate in a multi-session training to learn about how invention supports STEM standards and develops 21st century skills, while also becoming familiar with the YIP curriculum and invention convention. We will engage in lively discussions, best practice sharing, and hands-on activities. We are offering 2 separate workshops to better accommodate schedules. Please register for just one. (Note, each workshop consists of two, 2 hour sessions).

    The Young Inventors’ Program of the University of New Hampshire’s Leitzel Center is a K-12 project-based learning experience that provides hands-on STEM enrichment opportunities as educators guide students through the invention process to solve problems while applying STEM learning and gaining 21st century skills. The YIP Curriculum and supporting materials are available for FREE to schools and programs. YIP is adaptable to all learning environments and formats and flexible enough to meet diverse students needs, and applicable to a broad range of disciplines, and it is accessible to anyone.

    Exploring Engineering Design with the Young Inventors' Program

    Celebrate Mass STEM Week with the Young Inventors' Program!
    Explore strategies to bring engineering design into your classroom with an introduction to the Young Inventors' Program. This K-12 project-based curriculum meets core standards, including the NGSS, and provides hands-on STEM activities to take students on an invention journey through the design process, culminating in a showcase of original inventions that may lead to local, regional, national and international competitions. Learners will have an opportunity for expression and creativity as they develop and practice higher-order thinking skills. This workshop will provide you with all of the resources you need to bring the Young Inventors’ Program curriculum to your classroom – all FREE for your school.

    STEM Week Challenge: Hurricane Heroes! Storm City, MA

    How can you empower your students to see themselves in STEM by putting their skills to the test to solve real-world problems that can occur due to extreme weather events? Engage your students in a unique experience that integrates science concepts and the engineering design process in an exciting way! Join the Wade Institute for Science Education, Salem Sound Coastwatch, and Lloyd Center for the Environment from October 18-22, 2021 for the STEM Week Challenge: Hurricane Heroes! Storm City, Massachusetts.
    What’s the Challenge? Imagine that a category 6 hurricane has hit Storm City, MA. The city has been flooded by 14 inches of rain and faces several problems that MUST be solved by your engineering team! You must find a way to evacuate people to safety and move floodwaters out of homes and businesses that are without electricity using an innovative design or an alternative source of energy. Students will be challenged to: 1) build a transport vessel that will move 25 people and remain afloat for five minutes and; 2) build a water movement system using gravity or alternative sources of energy to move water 2 km away from homes and businesses.

    Teachers, your students won’t have all the fun! Experience Hurricane Heroes! Storm City, MA from the student perspective during an inquiry-based, interactive pre-challenge professional development workshop. Learn how the phenomena-based challenge will allow you to use grade-level appropriate science and technology concepts that address Massachusetts curriculum standards and incorporate engineering concepts with physical and earth science disciplinary core ideas.

    Support: All registered teachers will receive a curriculum guide and support from the three sponsoring organizations. Massachusetts teachers who participate in the pre-challenge teacher workshop will also receive a kit of materials for the challenge.
    The Massachusetts STEM Week is sponsored by the Executive Office of Education and the MA STEM Advisory Council. The STEM Week Challenge is funded by a grant from the MA STEM Advisory Council. Hurricane Heroes! Storm City, MA is designed for middle school students but is easily adaptable for upper elementary or high school students. It can take place in your classroom or in remote learning settings. During the week of October 25th, students will have an opportunity to participate in a virtual challenge showcase to share their innovative solutions to real-world problems.

    PeBLES2 - a project of MMSA and BSCS - aims to design and investigatelocally adaptable three-dimensional instructional materialsand professional learning for elementary science. We work with teachers, scientists, and researchers to co-design locally adaptable units of instruction and professional learning to dig deeply into the science sensemaking and localization process. PeBLES2 teachers will be able to confidently “choose-their-own adventure”, making small or big tweaks to unit instructional bases to root science sensemaking into their “place”. 

    We are looking for fourth-grade teachers who are willing to help shape the design and development of a new, 4th grade, unit of study as members of our Teacher Steering Committee.


    September 15, 2021 - June 30, 2022


    We are looking for teachers who have…

    1. Experience with science teaching in the upper elementary grades.

    2. Expertise in teaching science, engineering, place-based learning, exceptional learners, emergent multilingual learners, ELA/math integration, and/or the NGSS. 

    3. Interest in and/or experience with NGSS curriculum design

    4. Are located in an Eastern Time Zone locale

    5. Availability to meet for an initial design conference (~2 days in September or October, substitute costs will be covered)

    6. Availability to devote ~4-6 hours per month to the design portion of the project (September, 2021 - January, 2022 - with the most intensive months anticipated in November, December, and January)

    7. Ability to teach science approximately 3 hours per week from March - June.

    Expectations (Design Phase):

    1. Attend a 2 day unit design conference

    2. Attend meetings approximately 1x per month

    3. Provide reviews of key unit documents and lessons. 

    4. Draft specific teacher guidance for lesson plans or unit documents related to the teacher’s area of expertise.

    5. Draft mock-up examples of localizations and/or activities to share as part of the materials.  

    6. Pilot or test lessons or parts of lessons with students and provide feedback

    Expectations (Pilot Phase):

    1. Implement an approximately 6-8 week science unit of study designed for fourth grade. Note: duration of the unit will depend on how much time is allotted to science instruction weekly. Ideally, teachers would budget approximately 3 hours a week for science instruction.

    2. Meet weekly (1 hour) with PeBLES2 curriculum developers, researchers and other pilot teachers to share feedback on the materials and examples of student work.  

    3. Commit to approximately 4 hours per month of asynchronous work (including but not limited to keeping an instructional log, filling out surveys, giving feedback on design, etc.).

    OXFORD, Ohio (Sept. 1, 2021) – Miami University’s Project Dragonfly is accepting applications for 2022 Earth Expeditions graduate courses that offer extraordinary experiences in 15 countries throughout the world. http://EarthExpeditions.MiamiOH.edu

    Earth Expeditions can build toward the Global Field Program (GFP), a master's degree that combines summer field courses worldwide with web learning communities so that students can complete the GFP master's part-time from anywhere in the United States or abroad. http://GFP.MiamiOH.edu

    Project Dragonfly also offers the Advanced Inquiry Program (AIP) master's degree that combines web instruction from Miami University with experiential learning and field study through several AIP Master Institutions in the U.S. Applications for Miami's 2022 cohorts are being accepted now with place-based experiences provided at zoos and botanical gardens in Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Jacksonville, New York, San Diego, Seattle, and St. Louis. http://AIP.MiamiOH.edu

    Join the AceraEI Life Sciences Change Agent Teachers (LSCAT) team and Medford High School for a FREE five-day professional development workshop series based on NGSS-aligned curricula. Participating teachers and department leaders will learn about new and relevant technologies, how scientists conduct lab research and work iteratively, and how to translate these innovations into labs and lessons plans that offer inspiration and a sense of purpose to students.

    The American Meteorological Society (AMS), headquartered in Boston, runs classes related to weather, climate and oceans. Details about the DataStreme Programs can be found at this website:


    These online classes are rich in content, along with one or two opportunities for online participation. There may also be a chance for one face to face meeting toward the end of the class in November. There will also be another class in the Spring of 2022.
