    Save the dates for our 2022 Summer Professional Development Institutes! Join the Wade Institute for Science Education and our collaborating partners for a unique, graduate level course that will engage you in hands-on, minds-on, inquiry-based investigations and increase your STEM content knowledge! Connect with scientists, engineers, and STEM professionals, and work with educators at our collaborating partner institutions to explore real-world phenomena through standards-aligned, hands-on, minds-on investigations that you can bring back to your classroom. Earn PDPs and optional graduate credits.

    This is a free, one-day workshop introduction to community-based project-based learning geared towards high school teachers in any STEAM discipline. The workshop contents are informed from a broader research project being conducted in the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society at MIT and there may be additional opportunities for continuation in the fall.
    • What: MIT supported free teacher training on community-focused PBL

    • When: April 16th Saturday 9am - 2pm (lunch included) - 1 Day Workshop

    • Where: TBD as we work out building access at MIT

    Connecting Science and Literacy in the Elementary Classroom

    A Virtual Professional Learning Opportunity for Grades 3-5 Educators

    How can you enhance your teaching strategies for integrating science and literacy in ways that foster critical thinking and sensemaking? Join the Wade Institute for Science Education and the EcoTarium as we explore the use of picture and trade books, as well as other tools for integrating science and literacy skills in the classroom. Learn how to shift your practice to teach your standards-aligned, grade-specific science content by using literature to spark minds-on, hands-on investigations that engage students in the Science and Engineering Practices. Identify ways to use books, discussion, and science writing to teach science. Participate in inquiry-based, phenomena-based investigations that explore engineering and life science topics through the lens of animal behavior. Connect your reading to real life and refine your scientific observation skills by examining the uniqueness of squirrels and other backyard animals. Return to your classroom with ideas and insights from peers along with a toolkit of four books and hands-on materials to immerse your students in science learning!

    Virtual Sessions: April 28th & May 5th, 12th, 19th, 2022 (3:30 PM – 6:00 PM ET)

    Cost: $350 per person; $300 per person if attending with at least one other teacher from your school district

    Keynote Speaker and Workshop Descriptions:

    Morning Keynote

    Paul Anderson - The Wonder of Science and the Science of Wonder.  Wonder is one of our greatest emotions.  It drives us to build knowledge by asking and then answering questions about our world.  Student wonder can be a powerful driver in the classroom as well, however unstructured inquiry can be frustrating to both teachers and learners alike.  In this keynote Paul Andersen will discuss wonder with a special consideration given to the current research on the best practices of teaching science through inquiry.    


    Paul Andersen is an educational consultant and YouTube creator living in Bozeman, MT.  Paul is an experienced educator having taught science in Montana for 20 years.  Paul was the 2011 Montana Teacher of the Year, and was also one of four finalists for the 2011 National Teacher of the Year.  In addition to teaching Paul has created hundreds of YouTube science tutorials that have been viewed millions of times by students around the world.  Paul has provided training for thousands of students, teachers, and administrators around the world.  Paul enjoys providing meaningful professional development that can be applied immediately in the classroom. 

    Afternoon Keynote

    Olivia Corradin - Human Genetics in the Era of Big Data.  Over the last decade advances in sequencing technologies have overhauled the study of human genetics. This has enabled generation of large datasets that can be leveraged to garner new insights into the pathogenesis of disease. Olivia will discuss the strategies utilized to study these datasets and the impact of these studies on our understanding of human health and disease.


    Dr. Corradin graduated with a bachelor’s of science in biochemistry from Marquette University where she worked with Dr. Edward Blumenthal. In 2011, she joined the lab of Peter Scacheri at Case Western Reserve University. Her thesis work focused on the study of genetic and epigenetic dysregulation of gene expression in human disease. Corradin joined Whitehead Institute as a Fellow in July 2016, and became an Institute Member and MIT Assistant Professor of Biology in 2021. Outside of the lab, Corradin is most likely to be found at a local dance studio continuing her love of ballet and contemporary dance.

    Since 1990, Population Education has been hosting train-the-trainer Institutes to prepare educators to facilitate workshops using our hands-on activities. During the Institute, we will:

    • Demonstrate a range of teaching activities 
    • Share presentation ideas and facilitation strategies 
    • Discuss the many social and ecological issues related to population growth and resource use 

    The learning sessions and materials are designed to prepare educators to present Population Education workshops to teachers and future teachers. The Institute is a must for:

    • Science, social studies, and math education faculty
    •  Nonformal educators who work with teachers at zoos, nature centers, and science centers 
    • K-12 teachers and curriculum specialists who present professional development workshops

    Participants Will Receive

    • An extensive handbook of training materials 
    • The latest edition of our award-winning “dot” video, World Population 
    • Gift bag full of Population Education curricula

    All Costs Covered

    For those chosen to attend the Institute, Population Connection will cover two nights lodging in a private room at the Warren Conference Center and Inn for Friday and Saturday, as well as all meals for the weekend. A travel reimbursement of up to $500 will be available.

    How to Apply

    An application is available on our website, www.populationeducation.org. From the home screen, click on the Leadership Institute link under the Trainers Network tab. Space is limited and spots always fill up quickly. Priority will be given to applicants who have clear opportunities during the 2022-2023 school year and beyond to facilitate workshops. The application deadline is March 22, 2022.

    Songbirds and Stewardship: Engaging Your Students with the Science of Migration Through Place-Based Learning and Citizen Science

    A Hybrid Professional Learning Opportunity for Grades 5-8 Educators

    Learn how to engage your students in citizen science through a place-based approach. Get an introduction to the fundamentals of place-based learning, participate in citizen science projects at Manomet, and develop guidelines, strategies and lesson plans to support all students as you establish citizen science environmental monitoring projects relevant to your school community. Bring back to your classroom firsthand experience investigating the phenomena of bird migrations as well as a curriculum packet provided by the Wade Institute for Science Education and Manomet!

    Virtual Sessions: Wednesday, April 27th and Wednesday, May 4th, 2022 (3:30 PM -6:00 PM ET)

    On-Site Session: Saturday, April 30th, 2022 (9:00 AM – 2:30 PM ET) at Manomet

    Teaching About the Climate Crisis: what teachers should know from students' perspective. 

    Virtual workshop, Saturday April 23, 10:00 - 11:30 AM.

    This training, in honor of Earth Week, will be led by passionate high school students in Spring Forward, a youth-led climate education organization which has led over 100 workshops for students. You will come out of the training prepared to lead effective climate lessons to students in a way which will grasp their attention and leave them empowered to take meaningful action. Open to all teachers; primarily oriented to elementary, middle school, and after school / informal instruction. (Organized by Spring Forward with the support of Elders Climate Action.) This webinar is targeted for formal and nonformal educators of learners in grades 3–12.

    March 4, 2022 | 9AM to 12PM: The Secret Life of Plants

    Photosynthesis and Climate Change

    Plants and other photosynthetic organisms have a unique role in our world, with the ability to turn carbon dioxide into biologically important products. In this set of labs, learn the biochemistry of this process by determining the right wavelengths of light and the effect carbon dioxide has on photosynthesis. Research how technologies use plants and photosynthesis as allies in combating anthropogenic climate change, and devise your own plant-based solutions to mitigate the effects of human activity on our world. This area is among the leading trends in biotechnology, allowing teachers and students to connect their classroom lab activities to contemporary research happening in the world.
