    The Fessenden School is an all boys independent day and boarding school serving 525 students in Pre-K to Grade 9 in West Newton, MA.     Position Summary

    The Fessenden School’s Middle School seeks a 5th Grade Science Teacher who is responsible for teaching 4 to 5 classes of 12-15 boys, being a member of the 5th grade team, supervising study halls as assigned, and coaching. There will be a stipend paid for coaching responsibilities.

    Schedule

    Orientation dates: August 19th and 20th, 2024.

    Monday-Friday, 7:30 am - 4:30 pm from August 26th, 2024 to June 10, 2025. 

    Monday faculty meetings from 4:30 - 5:45 pm. 

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    The essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

    • Create and plan lessons that connect to curriculum and sequential units that have been developed in collaboration with the Science Department Chair and colleagues.

    • Incorporate cross-curricular project-based learning, educational technology, and universal design principles into lessons.

    • Collaborate with colleagues, Department Chair, Director of Teaching and Learning, and Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to incorporate multicultural education into the science curriculum.

    • Collaborate with the Head of Middle School and Dean of Middle School to facilitate character education and service-learning programs. 

    • Exemplify the School’s mission and community principles, including honesty, compassion, and respect. 

    • Participate in and help facilitate all division and grade level activities and meetings.

    • Coach a sport and/or supervise guided study hall as assigned.

    • Collaborate with colleagues within grade level, division, department and student support services, including the Learning Resources Department.

    • Perform duties such as supervising dismissal, recess, lunch; being an advisor, grade team member, student club facilitator: leading/assisting with fall orientation, grade trips, one mandatory overnight grade trip (3 days 2 nights), and events.

    • Maintain all documentation connected with the curriculum and students which includes writing personalized comments for advisees and regular parent communication.

    • Attend faculty meetings; typically on Mondays from 4:30 pm to 5:45 pm.

    • Attend professional development meetings; three 8:30am to 4:00pm and three 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

    • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

    • Maintain current CPR/AED & first aid certification and child abuse prevention training.

    • Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications 

    • Bachelor’s degree in education or related subject.

    • Two years of experience in instructing children in an academic program.

    • Ability to develop and provide a universal design instructional approach to meet the learning needs of a range of students.

    • Enthusiasm and communication skills to engage boys and build meaningful relationships.

    • Strong supervisory and leadership skills to facilitate learning in a healthy learning environment.

    • Ability to perform critical thinking, organization, prioritization and problem solving with minimal supervision.

    • Ability to serve in a diverse community of colleagues, students, and parents.

    • Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, justice, diversity, and equity.

    • A commitment to boys and boys’ education.

    • Successful criminal background check.

    The Administrator for Science Test Development manages the development of the state’s grades 5 and 8 Science and Technology/Engineering (STE) tests and the high school Biology and Introductory Physics tests to ensure high-quality, content-accurate, and standards-aligned tests. Specifically, the administrator supervises science test development staff members, manages, and coordinates science-assessment work with the MCAS contractor, and uses the universal design for learning (UDL) principles and cultural responsiveness in the development of all science test materials. 

     

    The Administrator for Science Test Development will be assigned to the Office of Student Assessment Services and will be supervised by the Director of Test Development. The selected candidate will work with DESE staff and an external contractor to manage and implement the state science tests. Results of these tests are used for student, school, and district accountability. The high school Biology and Introductory Physics tests currently serve as a basis for the Competency Determination, a requirement for graduation from high schools in Massachusetts.

     

    The successful candidate will possess Master’s or higher degree in science, preferably in Biology, or a related field, as well as an understanding of scientific concepts within the disciplines of Earth and space science, life science, physical science, and engineering. The candidate will also have experience supervising and motivating staff to effectively perform and complete their work.

    The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University is a 281-acre museum of trees teaching the world about plants.     Position Description

    The Manager of Youth Education plays a pivotal role in advancing the mission of the organization by managing high- quality educational programming for youth within the Public Programs department at the Arboretum. This multifaceted role involves a dynamic combination of leadership and program development, creating meaningful educational experiences for young audiences ranging in age from Pre-K to High School. All the Arboretum’s programs are free and, in most cases, include transportation.

    Existing programs under the purview of the Manager include:

    • Field Study Experiences: Seasonal excursions led by dedicated volunteers for Boston Public School students from Pre-K through Grade 5.
    • Arboretum Young Scientists: A robust 5-week summer program designed for up to 20 Boston Public School students transitioning to 7th & 8th grades.
    • Self-Guided School Trips: Pre-registered, self-directed visits for local public-school students Pre-k to Highschool.
    • Summer Institute: A focused four-day workshop offering educators innovative approaches to using the outdoors as a means for teaching life science standards.
    • Arboretum Families Project: A budding early childhood initiative that will create nature-based learning experiences for families in adjacent public housing communities.
    • Family Hikes: Seasonally themed treks throughout the year, introducing families and caregivers to the wonders of nature.

    Duties and Responsibilities
    Functional Areas

    • Team Leadership: Supervise a team of full-time, part-time, and temporary staff.
    • Youth Education Programming:
      • Manage a comprehensive suite of youth education initiatives for Boston Public School teachers and student's Pre-K to 12, including school programs, summer programs, and teacher training.
      • Plan a year-round calendar of free family programs, including classes, workshops, and nature walks.
      • Engage the local community through outreach and co-develop responsive youth programming to meet their needs, broadening the Arboretum's impact.
      • Collaborate with the Manager of Visitor Engagement and the Manager of Adult Programs and Events to develop and implement youth-focused activities, exhibits, interpretive materials, and event programming.
      • Develop and deliver educational programs and lessons on diverse topics such as horticulture, botany, ecology, climate change, conservation, and sustainability for children in grades Pre-K to 12.
      • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
    • Volunteer Coordination: Recruit, train, and supervise volunteer guides who lead the Field Study Experiences and grow volunteer guides for other programs as needed.
    • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with the Head of Public Programs to develop a comprehensive 5-year plan for youth education, driving the long-term vision for youth education.
    • Program Evaluation: Create and execute an evaluation strategy to assess program effectiveness, record and report on key metrics, and use data for continuous improvement.

    Basic Qualifications

    Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications to be considered for this role:

    • Bachelor’s degree in education, museum studies, museum education, environmental studies, or related field, or equivalent experience, with at least 5 years of relevant work experience.
    • Teaching experience in public/private schools or an educational non-profit, with a working knowledge of Next Generation Science and Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering curriculum standards.
    • Demonstrated experience in staff management, including at least two years of supervisory experience.
    • Proven ability to create original content and curriculum.
    • Demonstrated experience and creativity in implementing and evaluating educational programs for youth and families.
    • Experience working across diverse age groups, with a capability and enthusiasm for engaging with youth from Pre-K to Grade 12.
    • Excellent classroom management skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to deal tactfully with visitors, students, volunteers, instructors, and staff.
    • Proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

    Additional Qualifications and Skills

    Physical Requirements

    Must be able to work outdoors in various plant collections and habitats during all seasons. Must be able to bend, reach, stoop, and lift to 25 lbs. Must be able to walk and stand for up to two hours at a time in indoor, greenhouse, and outdoor conditions. Must be able to lead programs across a 281-acre landscape.

    The Christa McAuliffe Center is a vibrant educational facility established in 1986 to honor the legacy of the first teacher in space, FSU alumna Christa McAuliffe '70. Today, the Center functions as a hub for much of Framingham State's informal STEM education and outreach serving students and educators across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and beyond. 


    The Center hosts the only Challenger Learning Center (CLC) in Massachusetts, a digital planetarium, and an exhibit hall. The national Challenger Center and its global network of Challenger Learning Centers use space-themed simulated learning and role-playing strategies to help students bring their classroom studies to life and cultivate skills needed for future success, such as problem solving, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork. 

    In 2023, the McAuliffe Center underwent major renovations designed to establish the Center as a unique STEM hub in Massachusetts and to continue Christa McAuliffe's legacy. In alignment with NASA's Strategy for STEM Engagement, the Center strives to attract diverse groups of students and spark their interest in STEM through learning experiences connected to NASA's space and earth science missions.  

    Program Facilitators are mainly responsible for the facilitation of activities in the Challenger Learning Center for students in grades 5 to 9. We are looking for individuals who are:

    • Comfortable with science content and eager to learn more.No specific science content knowledge is required, training is provided.
    • Confident in using education technology for thefacilitation of a wide range of learning experiences.
    • Comfortablewith creatively engaging students through the use ofrole-play and dynamic presentationstyles.
    • Team players, organized, and committed to meetthe needs of diverse learners who visit the Center.
    • A good planner, the Program Facilitator is able to quickly adapt to changes in the daily program or schedule of activities.


    Individuals who are fluent in Portuguese or Spanish are encouraged to apply.
