Opportunities for Teachers

    2017 Summer Professional Development Institutes are unique professional development courses offered in eight regions of Massachusetts. These professional development institutes for teachers bring together scientists, engineers and other STEM professionals with educators from museums, aquariums, natural science centers and other science, technology or cultural organizations to provide one week or hybrid graduate level courses. Visit partner sites to explore STEM content and inquiry-based activities. Depending on the region, daily activities include: nature walks, behind-the-scenes tours of laboratories, introductions to resource centers, modeling of inquiry-based activities and more. Each day is a balance of indoor, classroom-based components and outdoor field experiences. All activities are designed to help you meet State Frameworks and create interdisciplinary connections. Participants can choose to receive PDPs, or graduate credit and PDPs.

    One-Week Institutes for Grades 3-8 and Middle & High School Educators

    One-week professional development institutes for grades 3-8 educators combine content and skill development sessions. Visit each partner institution’s site for 1-2 days and participate in both hands-on inquiry investigations and content sessions. One-week professional development institutes for middle and high school educators combine content and skill development sessions taught by scientists, content specialists and professional educators. These courses are based out of the lead institution with field trips to area research labs, field sites and local businesses with product development laboratories.

    Hybrid Institutes for Grades 4-10 Educators

    Hybrid professional development institutes combine 16 hours of on-line instruction with a one-week on-site component. During the on-site component, spend a day at each partner institution’s site participating in hands-on inquiry investigations combined with content sessions.

    Science in the Field: Utilizing Local Ecosystems as Laboratories for Investigations

    Please mark your calendars for the High School Marine Science Symposium hosted by Northeastern University and the Massachusetts Marine Educators with additional support from Salem State University. These events aim to inspire interest in STEM fields among high school students, through a morning of hands-on workshops, lightning talks, and a keynote presentation.     Events will be held on:

    ·         March 9th 2017 at Northeastern University in Boston

    ·         March 15th 2017 in Salem State University in Salem

    ·         Both events will run from 8:30am to 1:00pm



    We are looking for presenters to deliver two 50-minute, back-to-back sessions to high school students in the morning.  There will be 15-25 students in each session, small enough to make it really meaningful and hands-on. Workshops will conclude by ~11:30. All presenters are provided with a light breakfast and lunch, but staying for lunch is not required.

    The Massachusetts Exploring Computer Science Partnership (MECSP), offers schools and teachers the opportunity to introduce computer science to students through the engaging curriculum of Exploring Computer Science (ECS).  The program consists of a high school introductory computer science course combined with a teacher professional development program. 

    PD will be offered in weeklong workshops across the state in late July/early August with possible follow-up sessions throughout the 2017-2018 year.

    How does a professional development workshop for educators in Bermuda at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) this summer from June 26-July1 sound? Participants will learn about the latest techniques in oceanographic and environmental data collection including ocean "glider" technology. Participants will also learn how to plan and implement a future field study course at BIOS for their students.

    CoderZ is an online learning environment for coding real and virtual robots on the cloud, anytime and anywhere. Whether you want to enhance your robotics programs with cool robot simulations, upgrade your coding class with object-oriented robot programming or increase student engagement with STEM through robotics competitions, after school activities, flipped classrooms and more, CoderZ is the solution for you.

    Gary Garber will lead the workshops. Gary is an instructor of Physics at Boston University Academy, and main coach of the Boston University Robotics Team. He has led dozens of PD workshops through the Mass Science Teachers Association and the New England Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers, where he was the president.  

    Earn 10 PDPs. At the workshops you will also have the option to sign up for follow-up webinars, a take-home assignment and a presentation session. Teachers who participate in the webinars, complete their assignment and make a presentation, will earn 10 PDPs.

    Applications to Share Due December 9, 2016

    AweSTEM! is WPI’s annual celebration of STEM educators held each spring. It’s an opportunity to network, learn from peers, and celebrate the work STEM educators do. This year’s event takes place on Thursday, March 30th. Each year, a Call for Sharing goes out for educators wishing to present interesting, engaging work they are doing with their students that relates to the theme for that year. This year’s theme focuses on projects, units, activities or other exciting work educators are doing that align with the new Science, Technology, Engineering (STE) Framework. While educators are welcome to present work in their individual subjects (i.e. biology, elementary science etc.) we are especially looking for projects that integrate or collaborate with math classwork. Educators of all grades (PreK-12) are welcome. What educators present can be something they’ve done for a long time that has been aligned with the new STE framework or something newly created. Presentations can be done by individuals or teams of educators working together.

    The Laboratory Robotics Interest Group was founded in the early 1990’s with a mission to promote professional growth and to educate members in both basic and leading edge technologies associated with laboratory automation and informatics. 

    Up to $2000 will be awarded to those science teachers in secondary schools throughout New England

    who best meet the criteria below. The objective of these grants is to provide funds to expand project-

    based activities in laboratory education settings.


     Applicants must be school teachers in New England, teaching in grades 8-12.

     Each applicant is required to submit a complete proposal outlined below.

     Agreement to present a summary of a successful project at a LRIG-NE meeting

    Applications will be assessed on the following criteria:

    The degree of scientific and technology concepts introduced

     The perceived ability of the program to enhance students learning of scientific and technical concepts

     The breadth of the student population impacted

     Quality and thoughtfulness of the written proposal

    We are actively seeking keen scientists, educators, students, and
    other practitioners of marine science to share their expertise with
    keen high school students. Graduate, undergraduate, and even
    well-prepared high school students are encouraged to participate, and
    presentations can be made by an individual or small group.  The format
    each day will be two back-to-back, hands-on workshop sessions lasting
    50 minutes each.  Presenters can participate in one or both of the
